Probst
scores upset win in 5th annual 'Dickson Classic' for AMRA Mods!!
------Wilmoth
takes 6th feature win of season in Late Models------
Despite threatening skies and
area afternoon rain showers, BDS Promotions once again stared Ma Nature
down, getting race #7 for the '08 season in the books.
The late arriving crowd was
treated to some outstanding action, a new name etched in the winner's
record books, and 119 competitors providing some fierce racing action.
Headlining the evening was the
5th annual 'Dickson Classic' for the AMRA Modifieds.
Heat winners Mike Wilson and Mark
Dickson lead a field full of the areas finest Modifieds to the start of
the 25 lap main.
Dickson bolted off the outside
pole, threatening to run away with the event as he initially opened up a
half straightaway advantage.
Wilson worked free from a battle
he and Brian Probst were waging for second, and caught Dickson who was
mired in attempting to lap the back of the field by lap 8.
Wilson grabbed the lead on lap 9
as the lead duo scrambled through the back markers, then saw the caution
wave a lap later as sentimental favorite Dickson pulled up lame with a
flat right front tire.
With Probst once again on
Wilson's
deck lid at the restart, the new lead pair separated themselves from the
field again, only to have fate once again deal the leader a cruel hand.
Steve Higgins slowed with a flat
tire, with Wilson and Probst already committed to the same line Higgins
used to exit the track. Ultimately, the resultant damage to
Wilson
would eliminate him from contention a lap after going back to green.
Probst, whose only other
modified feature win came in 2006, now inherited the lead, with Kenny
Johnson, Jake Hawkins, Louie Krushansky, Dave Defibaugh and Mike Basich
all stalking the race leader.
When the race resumed Johnson
went to the extreme top of the track, with Krushansky working an equally
low line around the high banked quarter mile.
Dave Defibaugh was working his
way from the 8th starting position, and made it a 3 wide battle at times.
Johnson had appeared to make a
pass for the lead on lap only to see the races final caution wave.
Paden City, WV's Probst turned up
the wick on the final restart, and despite determined attempts by his
tormentors, rolled the 'Forester & Son's Timber/Bridgeport Equipment/
Yeater Racing' #33 to the 'Camp
Copperhead' victory lane for a popular upset win.
Exiting his car to the well
earned applause of an appreciative crowd, as well as the $1000 payday, Probst
was both jubilant ad reflective in his post race interview.
We've been so close, especially
the last couple of weeks, and it seems like something always happened or I
made a mistake that cost us the race. I was beginning to wonder if we
would ever get a win. This win means so much, especially being able to
win with a field like this. I got so loose at the end, I didn't think I
could hold Kenny off. I kept seeing his nose, and knew he was there every
lap."
Before the trophy presentations
began, Johnson pointed out the reason for Probst's loose condition, as the
#33 sat on a nearly flat right rear tire in victory lane.
Johnson parlayed his patented
high line into a very close runner-up finish, and Dave Defibaugh completed
his charge through the field to earn the final podium finish position.
Louie Krushansky and Mike Basich
completed the top 5.
Wilson's lap of 14.14 seconds was
tops for the Sistersville Center Genesis Health Care Mods, as he and
Dickson took the heat wins.
Paul Wilmoth Jr's remarkable
season continued Saturday night as the Clarksburg, WV driver once again
took top honors in the 'Midcap
Land & Timber' Late Model division. Wilmoth once again looked invincible
in leading all 25 laps.
While the leader ran uncontested,
the battle for 2nd-6th was well worth the price of admission, as a high
flying Steve Weigle led a full compliment of WV hotshoes in a ever
changing battle for position. Scott Irvin, Butch McGill, Steve Wilmoth,
Joe Loudin, and ultimately Bobby Hill and Donnie Dotson would all
challenge Weigle and each other for top 5 finishes. Weigle turned back
all challengers in some intense side by side action, earning his
finest finish of the season, but had to settle for bridesmaid status as
Wilmoth earned win #6 of the season, and his 2nd in as many nights.
Weigle cashed in a well earned
runner-up paycheck, with 6th starting Joe Loudin, Steve Wilmoth, and 9th
starting Donnie Dotson right behind and rounding out the top 5.
Weigle was the evenings fast
qualifier. McGill, Paul Wilmoth and Scott Irvin were the heat winners,
while Dan Morrison scored the consi win.
Tyler County Speedway's version
of the Beach Boy, Joel Prosser "caught a wave" and rode it all the way to
his 2nd feature win of the season in the Litman Excavating KoM crate
engine feature event. Prosser left the struggle for position in his rear
view mirror, as defending KoM champion Sonny Conley eventually muscled
past Michael Griffin for the runner up spot, but could only watch the fast
disappearing 'Dutch Pantry Restaurants/Amsoil' sponsored #77 of Prosser a
popular win.
Conley, Griffin, Shane Hitt and
Jim Cochran made up the remainder of the top 5 finishers in the economical
Late Model class that is showing weekly growth.
Griffin and Prosser garnered heat wins.
Mitch Eddy added to his points
lead in the 'Custom Engraving & Awards' Junkyard Warrior division, scoring
win 5 of the season ahead of Dave Wamsley and Brandon Doll.
Jordan Doty scored his second win
in as many weeks in the 'Custom Engraving & Awards' MWRA mini-wedge
feature, turning back points leader Steven West and Tony Cochran in a barn
burner for 'the Little League of Auto Racing'.
Heavy fog moved into the valley
canceling the remainder of the events, as double features for the Pure
Stock and Mod-Lite divisions will add to the program of the already
impressive June 21st card, as 'the Bullring' will host the 5th annual
'Eaton/Childer's Memorial- KING OF THE RING'. The $5000 to win tribute
race will celebrate the memory of a pair of track legends, while hosting
the IRS (Independent Racing Series) Late Models in what promises to be a
must-see event for every true race fan.
Racing in all other regular
classes will also be included in a night of action that's sure to be a
can't miss hit.
