WAY IN WORLD OF OUTLAWS

> Haubstadt,
IN - July 6,
2008. Craig Dollansky of
Elk River,
> MN, drove to victory Sunday night at Tri-State Speedway in the 40 lap
> World of Outlaws Sprint Car feature event. Dollansky was behind the
> wheel of the Woodward outlaw winged sprint sponsored by Snap-On. The
> occasion was the make-up for the original WoO 2008 race date which
> was rained out back on April 19th. Thirty drivers provided the
> competition during the night’s racing program sponsored by Dewig
> Meats with 25 starting the feature.
>
> Dollansky started outside pole, forged into the lead at the
> outset, and then led all 40 laps of the feature. Steve Kinser of
> Bloomington,
IN,
who started on the pole by virtue of a win in the
> Crane Cams Dash followed Dollansky throughout, challenging for the
> lead on the restarts. Ironically the 2 drivers were also winners of
> the features held during the last 2 appearances of the WoO drivers at
> Tri-state
Speedway.
Kinser had won in 2007 with Dollansky winning
> the year before in 2006.
>
> In victory lane Dollansky made note of the his formidable
> competition. “It is never easy when you are racing with Steve
> Kinser. On the restarts Steve was there but after a couple of laps I
> wouldn’t see him anymore.” It was Dollansky’s sixth win on the tour
> this year and Steve was just behind even in or out of lapped traffic
> looking for an opening. There was no ground to gain up high on the
> track where the cushion had widened some 20 feet entering the turns.
>
> World of Outlaws Points leader Donny Schatz was third, Paul
> McMahon fourth, and Joey Saldana placed fifth. Schatz and Saldana
> started outside the top five and worked their way up. Gaining the
> most ground was Kraig Kinser who started 25th using a provisional and
> finished 15th.
>
> Action behind the two leaders produced 5 caution periods and 2
> red flags. Fast qualifier Jason Meyers brought out the first caution
> with three laps on the board as he then headed into the pits for
> repairs. Three laps later Tony Bruce Jr. spun. After 6 more laps
> under the green Tyler Thompson spun sideways. Another yellow came
> two laps later when Danny Smith’s car lost power. With 17 laps
> complete a red flag appeared after Terry McCarl went end for end in
> turn one in the Big Game Tree Stands sprinter. A 2car spin on lap 27
> was followed by a double flip on the backstretch. Jac Haudenschild
> who drove away from the first entanglement was caught up again in the
> one following the restart. Also involved was Shane Stewart.’
> Stewarts car ended upside down on it’s wing in the infield. That
> accident was followed by an open red with crews being allowed to add
> fuel, check air pressure, etc. The nineteen remaining cars were
> pushed off with 13 laps to decide the final positions and some hard
> green flag racing followed.
>
> Randy Hannigan, Sam Hafertepe Jr., and Joey Saldana won the
> three outlaw heats with Paul May from Terre Haute, IN, winning the 12
> lap last chance race. Veteran Bill Rose rolled his car on the front
> stretch in that semi feature.
> In UMP Modified racing Zack Fair of Petersburg, IN, won the 25
> lap feature. Fair finished ahead of Kent Robinson. Both had won
> their heats and used strong runs to stay out front for the distance.
> Fair who competes in a wide loop of tracks in the Tri-State area was
> jubilant. The win was a momentum builder! “We have to work so hard
> to get a win here on what we consider our home track.”
>
> One of those reasons was UMP National Points leader Randle
> Sweeney who finished third after starting sixteenth on the field.
> After he began working the top five the task became even more
> difficult. Clint DeMoss and Matt Huddleston rounded out the top
> five. Mark Cole won the other heat race and Sweeney won the
> shortened consy which ran afoul of the 12 minute track time limit for
> consolation races. Thirty-one modified cars were on hand.
>
> The next event scheduled for Tri-State Speedway will be the
> Grand Finale for USAC Indiana Sprint Week on Saturday night July
> 19th. The event is sanctioned by the United States Auto Club. There
> will be eight races in eleven days at six Hoosier tracks and Tri-
> State Speedway will host the final round to decide the 2008 Champion.
