Robinson wins “Terminix Modified Nationals” at RTR
By:  T. J. Layne

COAL GROVE, OH-For the third straight week, despite threatening weather in the tri-state region, it was dry at Rocky Top as the seventh race of the season got underway in the “Terminix Modified Nationals” and “Terminix Kids Night”.

In the 30 lap Late Model A-Main, Jackie Boggs took the lead at the start while Greggie Oliver moved into the second position.  Boggs pulled away to nearly a straightaway lead as the car everybody was watching was the #9 machine of Terry Hicks.  Hicks, driving the machine that Kasey Kahne piloted at the Prelude to the Dream, started last on the field in 17th and by the lap fifteen mark had worked his way up to the top five.  After several laps of side by side racing, Hicks got by Kevin Wagner to work his way into the third position by lap 25.

On lap 28, the caution flag flew as that would bunch the field up and erase a nearly half lap lead by Boggs.  This would also put Hicks in striking distance now for the win in a two lap shootout for $2,000.  On the restart, Boggs fired quickly to a five car length lead while the battle was for second between Oliver and Hicks.  Boggs would come to the checkers and claim his fourth win of the season as the battle for second was a photo finish with Oliver beating out Hicks by a foot for the position!  Kevin Wagner finished fourth with D. J. Wells fifth.  Boggs won the Tri-America Contractors Dash while Wagner and Nick Bocook won Engines Inc. heat races.

Up next was the 30 lap, $1,000 to win “Terminix Modified Nationals” for the Tomahawk Race Car Modifieds.  At the start, outside polesitter Adam Jordan would take the lead while Todd Robinson quickly moved into the second position.  Robinson would pressure Jordan and made the pass on lap eight to take the lead.  While Robinson led, the best battle on track was between Jason Perry, Rick Hensley, and Jordan for the second position as they battled two and three wide for nearly the entire race!  At the end, nobody would have anything for Robinson as he came to the checkers to win the “Terminix Modified Nationals”!  Jason Perry finished second with Adam Jordan third, Rick Hensley fourth, and Joey Back fifth.  Randy Boggs won the Tri-America Contractors Dash while Chris Shelton and Greg Anderson won Engines Inc. heat races.

In the Bomber A-Main, David Dunn and Wayne Hughes battled side by side for the lead at the start.  Dunn led the first five laps or so with Hughes then making the pass to move into the lead.  As the race reached it’s late stages, Jeremie Bretz would get by Dunn to move into the second position and try to pressure Hughes for the lead.  Nobody could do anything with Hughes though as he came across the checkers to win his sixth feature of the year!  Jeremie Bretz finished second with David Dunn third, John Rayburn fourth, and Brian Sammons fifth.  Hughes and Dunn won Engines Inc. heat races.

Looking for three wins in a row, Tony Sites took the lead at the start of the Mod Lite A-Main.  Second place runner Chris Stone would pressure Sites for the lead and eventually make the pass on lap seven!  With Stone leading, Sites still remained bumper to bumper with Stone.  As the field was heading towards the white flag, Sites would spin the car off of turn four to bring out the caution!  On the restart, nobody would have anything for Stone as he came across the checkers to win his second feature of the season!  Dennis Lampheir finished second with Jerry Cushing third, Harold Kuhn fourth, and Tony Sites fifth.  Sites and Stone won Engines Inc. heat races.

There will be no racing at Rocky Top on Friday, July 4th for the Independence Day holiday.  Racing action will resume on Friday, July 11th with the “Second Annual Engines Inc. 50” paying $5,000 to win for Late Models.  Tomahawk Race Car Modifieds and Mod Lites will also be racing.  Bombers will have the night off.  For more information visit our official website at www.rockytopraceway.net .
